Mobile phone use reaches

The number of cell phone users in China hit 592 million. That’s 8% more than at the beginning of the year.
At the same time, the number of land-line users dropped by 6.5 million to 358 million.
What do you think that means for China Mobile?

It looks like it won’t be long until China Mobile starts selling Apple’s iPhone in China. According to a China Mobile spokesperson:
“Apple is no longer insisting on a revenue-sharing policy, so the biggest hurdle for China Mobile to bring in the iPhone has been cleared.”

Yesterday was one of the nastiest days for the stock market in a while. And the market as a whole is on track for its worst June since the Great Depression, according to Bloomberg. That’s not exactly the kind of news you want to read while you’re drinking your coffee and munching on your bagel. [...]

The Taiwan cabinet expanded the ability of Taiwanese brokerage firms to  invest in China. Taiwan brokers can invest up to 20% of assets into Chinese companies, double the previous limit.
This is just more money that will pour into Chinese stock and that is a very good thing.

Inflation isn’t just a U.S. problem.
Inflation (especially for food) is also a problem in China. Consider this: McDonalds just raised prices on most of its menu items yesterday.
It is also the second time this year that it has raised prices.
McDonalds isn’t the only company raising prices in China. KFC and Pizza Hut  increased menu prices [...]

May existing home sales climb 2%

We just got May existing home sales data from the National Association of Realtors. Here’s what the numbers looked like …

Some breaking news out of Bank of America: The company plans to get rid of 7,500 employees after it consummates its deal to buy Countrywide Financial. That’s expected to happen July 1 now that Countrywide shareholders have voted in favor of the deal. Personally, I think this is one of the worst deals in the [...]

Goodyear thinks there is a mother lode of profits to be found in China and Brazil.
“We anticipate capital investments totaling between $1 billion and $1.3 billion per year from 2008 to 2010,” said CEO Robert Keegan.
