What a difference a few steps lower in the oil food chain can make.
CNOOC, China’s largest offshore oil producer, reported an 89% jump in quarterly profits. Unlike PetroChina, CNOOC isn’t restrained by the government on what it can charge for the oil it pulls out of the earth.
At one time last year, PetroChina was the largest company in the world by market cap.
Today, it is getting clobbered because its profits plunged by 34% and said things won’t get any better the rest of this year.

China Mobile is still booming.
Subscriber growth, revenues, and profits were all better than Wall Street was expecting. That’s nothing new though because the pinstripe crowd habitually underestimates China Mobile’s opportunity.
