Lawyer shortage in Japan

Japan has half the population of the U.S. but it also has only one-third of the number oflawyers.
Many small Japanese towns have no lawyers whatsoever.
Sounds like a good problem to me.

Baskin Robbins has been operating in China (mainlyBeijing) since 1993, but is now ready to aggressively expand.
There are currently 40 Baskin Robbins in China but itjust signed a franchise deal with a Chinese partner to open anadditional 100 stores.
Basking Robbins also operates stores in India, Japan, and Malaysia.

The National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBSC) saidits macroeconomic early-warning index was 114.9, a ‘green light’zone of economic prosperity.

I said yesterday that I wasn’t interested in the ChinaDistance Education (NYSE:DL) IPO.
Even after pricing at the low end of expectations, DL dropped by 5% onits first day of trading.

Emergency air pollution steps in Beijing

Despite earlier measures, the air pollution in Beijing remains bad.
That why the Chinese government unveiled additional emergency plans to clean up the air, includingtaking more cars off the roads and closing down 105 more electric, furniture, building material and chemical plants inBeijing. And halting all construction work.

Taiwan welcomes Chinese investment dollars

Beginning in October, Taiwan will permit Chinese investors to invest inits stock market.
The total capitalization of the Taiwan stock market is around $25 billion so even a modest amount of Chinese moneycould send Taiwan stock soaring.

China Mass Media is an independent televisionadvertising company in China that provides a full rangeof integrated television advertising services to state-owned China Central Television, or CCTV.
China Mass Media will sell on the New York StockExchange under the symbol CMM.

Cars in China

Fifteen years ago, there were almost no private cars in the country. China now has 15.2 million private cars. Still, less than 4% of the country’s 1.3 billionpeople have already bought a car. That’s the same percentage of car ownership the U.S. had in 1915!

Another Chinese IPO

China Distance Education provides onlinetraining programs for occupational and professional certification, to prepare people for college entrance exams, and inforeign languages.
And will go public in the U.S. on July 28.
Sounds a lot like New Oriental Education, doesn’t it? It is a tiny and much less profitable cousin though and Iwouldn’t touch it.
