China COSCO profit doubles

China COSCO, the largest shipper in Asia, more than doubled itsprofits in the last quarter.
In particular, COSCO said its dry bulk segment was very strong. That is good news for the dry bulk shipper we hold inAsia Stock Alert.

Each Chinese gold medalist will receive a US$50,000 cashprize. Let me tell you, $50,000 is a ton of money in China.
This payment isn’t new either. China paid roughly halfthat amount for gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

China Life chops stake in Visa

China Life Insurance reduced its position in Visa International from 6 million to 3 million shares in 2008.
China Life made a bundle on those shares because itbought in at the IPO.

Kuwait said that its oil exports to China haveincreased by 50% in thelast year. Not in dollar terms but in barrel terms.
That doesn’t surprise me one bit. And don’t expect China’s appetite for energy to stall either.

Here is a statistic that made my eyes bug out: it is estimated that one Japanese company a day opens anoffice/branch/factory in China.
You don’t have to invest in only Chinese companies to profit from the Chinese economic miracle.

The Australian government gave its blessing to the Aluminum of China (Chalco) to take a minority 11% stake in Australian mining giant RioTinto.
The Australians weren’t happy about approving the purchase but they know that if they didn’t approve the sale,China would turn to Africa and Latin America for bothnatural resources and ownership stakes.

Did you know that China hasfour shopping malls that are larger than the Mall of America in Minnesota? Two of those malls are even bigger than theEdmonton Mall in Alberta. Lastly, the world’s largest mall recently opened in Beijing.

Auto imports soar in China

The roads of Beijing are crowded with non-Chinese cars.
In the first six months of 2008, China imported 212,000 vehicles a 53% increase from the same period of last year.
The dollar value increase was even more dramatic. The dollar value hit $7.74 billion, a 71.3%. That tells me that themarket is for high-ticket luxury cars.
