Chinese officials think their stimulus plan is working. The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet’s National Development and Reform Commission, Liu Tienan, said:
“We have set a growth rate of about 8 percent for 2009. I think we have the conditions, the possibility and the confidence to deliver that. Despite the downward pressure on the Chinese economy [...]

China drought, agricultural opportunity

by Tony Sagami on February 26, 2009

in General

It seldom gets any media attention over here, but China has been suffering from one of its worst droughts in history. This article in the International Herald Tribune explains how dire the food situation is becoming.
Water supplies have been drying up for decades, the result of pervasive overuse and waste. Underground aquifers have been so [...]

“Go Away!” says American Express to cardholders

by Tony Sagami on February 25, 2009

in General

This doesn’t have anything directly to do with Asia — except that Americans will have less credit to buy cars, electronics, toys, clothes, TVs, and shoes — but I thought it was a very important data point about the U.S. economy.
American Express (AXP: 37.21 -0.53 -1.40%) is offering $300 cash to its cardholders that pay [...]

Japan exports shrink by 46%

by Tony Sagami on February 25, 2009

in General

Japan is a very export dependent country. That is why my jaw dropped when I read that its exports fell by 46% in January on a year-over-year basis.
The biggest drop was in autos, which plunged by 69%. Don’t expect any good profit news from Honda (HMC: 31.16 -0.16 -0.51%) and Toyota (TM: 78.16 -2.42 -3.00%) [...]

in General

Pioneer getting out of the flat panel TV business

by Tony Sagami on February 12, 2009

in Asian Market

A lot of people don’t know that Pioneer is a Japanese brand.
Pioneer says that the flat panel TV business is so tough that it is considering getting out of it completely.
Is that great news for the other flat panel makers, like AUO Optronics (AUO: 9.15 -0.16 -1.72%), because it means less competition or is it [...]

China stimulus plan working?

by Tony Sagami on February 12, 2009

in Asian Market

China has a $586 billion stimulus plan and it appears to be working. New loans from Chinese banks increased by 21% in January and the money supply increased by 18%.
I am skeptical that the Chinese economy will get back to the boom-boom days right away, but it looks like the Chinese economy will continue to [...]

Malaysia’s exports dropped by 14.9% in December from a year ago, the largest drop in seven years. Exports to the U.S. dropped by an eyebrow-raising 30%.
