Pioneer getting out of the flat panel TV business

A lot of people don’t know that Pioneer is a Japanese brand.

Pioneer says that the flat panel TV business is so tough that it is considering getting out of it completely.

Is that great news for the other flat panel makers, like AUO Optronics (AUO: 9.84 +0.19 +1.97%), because it means less competition or is it horrible news because Pioneer wouldn’t run for the hills unless the business really stunk?

I think the answer is BAD. That’s why my Asia Stock Options portfolio owns put options on AUO.

Pioneer is a more expensive brand of plasma. Back when I bought my 50″ Panasonic plasma, I really wanted the Pioneer but I didn’t want to spend the $1000 more to get it.
